When I took a break from my advertising/PR career, I  began to write film, music, and book reviews for the local newspaper, as well as do college teaching.

One day, the newspaper's executive editor asked the book review editor, if he knew of anyone who could start a weekly column on business books.

I was recruited and my weekly column was soon appearing in most of the nation's urban newspapers, and many suburban ones too.

Show above, my first book, Fort Worth: Catching the World's Attention. I'm also the author of Fort Worth: A Sesquicentennial Celebration, and Financial Troubleshooting.

Before long, I was facing deadlines from editors all over the U.S. On any given morning, I might interview Tom Peters, Kenny G, Hal Holbrook-- all before lunch. I'd go to a film screening or concert, and deliver a lively review by 9 p.m. for the next morning's paper.

In spare moments I would write for the New York Times Book Review, or USA Today, or Chamber Music magazine.

A freelance writer could once get a lot of work from newspapers. I'm told those days are gone. My most recent paid writing assignment has been for a blog!
